Fresh Start

August was spent in Troy, TN. Really only had 48 hours notice before having to be there. One week visiting my mom in Lake Livingston and then to Brookshire for most of September.  Even though we are just on the west side of Houston it seems a world away from Baytown.

I don't know what my problem is, but I'm coming up with a game plan to transform my outlook.  Spending money isn't fixing me and will cause more problems in the long run.  So let's see what the next couple of days brings.

Wow! Lots and Lots!

So much has happened in the last month! Zeb walking. He started on July 3rd which is also Shannda's birthday. Got a new RV On June 27th. Got job in Baton Rouge. Been here for a month already.  Had to have my brother Michael drive my car to BR from Baytown and then we left for family vacation in New Braunsfels on July 18th.  That was a hell of a drive with my almost one year old.  Would have been miserable by myself.  Left the whole fam damily in the hill country the next Friday.  I had gotten Shannda and Karli in Kerrville Thursday and they drove back to LA with me.  So far they have been here a week and it has rained the entire time.

Got a big scare yesterday.  Clay had gotten word that we would have to get ready to be in L.A. by this next Wednesday. Los Angelas not Louisianna. I am so unprepared and spent all day yesterday running around like a headless chicken.  Found out that evening the job was a no-go, but it was a big wake-up call for me.  That is one of my "job duties".  To have everything ready to go in 48 hours or less.  I caught a break and am trying to do get to the place I need to be.  Job prospects are plenty right now.  Especially the dry spell we experienced the first half of the year.  Have no idea where we'll be next week, but that's half the fun.  Punky-punky will be one this Sunday.  I for one will be celebrating.

Time Flies!

We've been at Aunt Sherren's for almost two months now.  Clay has been working on a second story addition while we've been waiting to hear about a job.The PA job has been postponed til' mid July or so.  We've been hearin about jobs in Chicago, Baton Rouge, and South Texas, but so far no firm offeers.  Starting to get bored with the same old scenery and the stress that comes with living with relatives.

Looking at ideas for Zebapalooza 1!  Can't believe it's been almost a year! Life is good! Looking forward to the next chapter....

Perfect Weekend

We were in Katy all last week for Clay's CPI course.  We headed out Saturday and headed back to Beach City.  Hopefully we will hear about a job soon.

Ryder has his first birthday Saturday at Tom Bass Park in Pearland.  It is a beautiful park.  Uncle Tommy was there as well as Jason's parents. Aunt Sherren, Aunt Cindy, Shannda, and Lucas made it too. We had a really good time and followed Lacy back to their new house and enjoyed visiting some more and beer and pizza.  Sunday we had breakfast at Whataburger and then came home for a nap.  Cindy and the girls came by to visit and then we went to Grammy and Pop-Pop's for some Chicken spaghetti.  We really couldn't ask for a better weekend.  LIFE IS GOOD!

I'm really trying to get into the habit of posting everyday even if it's really short and insignificant. We'll see how it goes.

Lake Livingston

Lake Livingston is a great place for people from the Houston area to go.  In RV speak it's a great "one tank trip". With gas approaching $3.50 a gallon it's probably gonna be pretty popular this summer.  My favorite part is that my mama is here.  She is so good with Zeb and she's such a great cook.  Zeb loves her food as much as me.  Clay is a more than willing taste tester.  Zeb has slept pretty much all night since he was a couple of weeks old.  I would wake him up to eat.  Since the beginning of February he has been getting up a couple of times a night to eat.  This has just absolutely drained me.  Now that he is eating solid food he seems to sleep much sounder and longer.  I guess that makes up for three or four dirty diapers a day instead of one every three or four days.

I honesty don't know if anyone else reads this but if they do I just want them to know that I realize baby poops and such are not fodder for polite conversation, but I'm blogging more to have something to look back on and remember Zeb's childhood.  Every parent I have talked to has regrets about not keeping journals, taking enough pictures or videos.  I really don't want those regrets.   I want to remember and share it with Zeb when he's ready.  Since he is most likely my only child I've only got one shot.  Anyone who knows me knows that I never wanted children.  There was good reason to believe that medically I would not be able to have any.  It truly is a miracle that he is here at all.  He amazes me everyday and I am a better and more complete person and woman.  I am so blessed.  LIFE IS GOOD.

Wednesday March the 2nd

It is amazing how much babies change.  Zeb sat up on his behind from being on his belly.  At seven months this is not amazing, but he had only been sitting up with no support for about a week.  I thought there would be more of a lag in between these milestones.  He also pulled himself up to standing from sitting using the bars from his crib and said "hi" and "moo".  All in one day!!!  I think he was showing off for his grandmother.

My mom came over in the morning and Clay and I went to town for supplies.  It was nice having a little time to ourselves. While we were gone my mother fed him graham crackers, applesauce, ritz crackers and cheetos.  This may not sound like a big deal but up until then he had just had mashed potatoes, beans, carrots and spaghetti.  He didn't have any kind of allergic reaction so I guess it's all right.  Anything goes with grandmother.  Now I just mash up whatever I'm eating.  Zeb's new diet also resulted in another milestone.  His first solid poop on the 3rd!!

I don't know if his development lagged because we never put him down enough or what, but he's just growing and changing so fast now.  Two months ago he just sat there and made cooing sounds and did the occasional roll-over.  Now he can move from one side of his crib to the other without ever crawling. He does a lot of falling creatively.  On Grammy's birthday I was able to catch him on the camcorder crawling for the first time.  He had crawled backward and forward about a foot six weeks ago or so, but hadn't done it again.  I guess that time was a fluke, but I got all excited and called everyone to tell them and nothing since then.  I've learned he's good at making a liar out of me.  He still only says da-da consistently and has been doing that since Clay's birthday.  He'll accidentally say mama, but doesn't seem to connect it to me.  Clay will walk in the door or laugh and he'll just "da-da-da-da" and look right at him or say it and look around for Clay.  I'll admit I'm kind of jealous but apparently I'll hear mama enough in the coming years I'll be sick of it, but I still look forward to that first time.  Life is good can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Moving

One word: SUCKS!!
When we got home Friday evening we were exhausted.  We knew we had a lot of work ahead of us so we pretty much just crashed.  It was nice sleeping on a king-size bed.  You wouldn't thing six inches would make a big difference, but size really does matter.

The task in front of us was overwhelming.  Thankfully my wonderful friends Ronnie and Jenny pitched in.  We also got some much needed muscle from Bill, Damian, and Steven.  I am deeply indebted to all.  Zeb was super fussy with all the chaos and that rendered me rather useless.

Clay and I decided we had become too accustomed to supervisory roles and that doesn't get the job done.
It is amazing how much crap people can accumulate in four years.  I quickly realized that fitting a 3800 sq. ft. space into a 30' RV is tricky.  I decided to make it therapuetic instead of tragic.  The really important things aren't things at all and I had been surrounded by my most precious possessions all along.  Kind of Dorothy-ish but true.  Tuesday the first we got the hell out of there and headed toward Lake Livingston and my mom.

Fort Pickens

When we were in Pensacola we stayed at Fort Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore.  If you ever get a chance to take your family here, do it!  I had gone to recreation.gov and purchased a national parks pass.  It takes a while to come in so I had it shipped to Kara.  It hadn't come in until a couple of days before we dropped her off so we couldn't use it until our return trip.  The pass cost $85 but once we got there our reduced rate for an RV site was $10 instead of $20.  Staying two nights really only saved us $20, but when you figure any other RV park is $30 to $40 a night you can definitely justify the cost of the pass.  If it weren't for the website I would have never known about this park so the pass was worth it to us because this place was awesome!

Gulf Islands National Seashore is 160 miles of barrier islands that stretch from mile marker 57 (that is where I saw exit on the way back) in Mississippi to Pensacola.  Everything is protected here.  Animals, land, birds, grass.  When you enter the park you drive for 4 to 5 miles until you get to campsites.  You have the bay on one side and the gulf on the other.  At some points you can see both at the same time.  Being right by one of the nation's hot spots for spring break it is surprising to find such pristine virgin beaches.  No hot dog stands, t-shirt shops.  Nothing but white sand and clear water.  Absolutely beautiful and a go-to destination for just about anyone.

Fort Pickens was a union stronghold during the war of northern aggression.  Fort Barrancas is on the coast and was controlled by confederate forces.  The visitors center has a short film that you can see that describes a brief but significant battle of the Civil War.  The fort was briefly revitalized during WWII but has been rendered insignificant to national security and served strictly as a national park and wildlife preservation since.  It is very hard to describe the beauty of this national treasure.  I think this is especially striking because of its close proximity such a populous commercialized region and remains so untouched by the masses.  In the morning, when the fog rolls in from both sides and entombs the island for several hours it is easy to imagine a more primitive time.  Timeless almost.  You can see nothing.  Only hear the gulls and the waves. It is a unique experience that everyone should have.

From Houston Pensacola is a solid eight hours by car.  You have to figure 10 to 12 hours if you are traveling with kids or pulling an RV.

The perfect family vacation from the Houston area would be to stop at the National Seashore in Biloxi for a couple of nights and then drive as far as you can (probably Tallahassee or so) and stay the night and then make the trip to Wekiva River RV resort near Sanford, Florida on US State Road 46 for as long as you can and then stop for at least two or three nights at the National Seashore in Pensacola before making your way back to Houston.  WRRVR would be a great place to stay if you are planning on taking the kids to Disney.  At about $35 a night and about 45 mins to the parks you can't beat it.  We really do best when we don't have a lot of one night stops where you have to set-up and tear down within 16 or so hours.  It usually only takes us about 20-30 minutes, but seems to add stress.  I like to stay a minimum of two nights even if we have to get up on that second morning super early and get going.  Most of the time you only have a couple of hours of daylight left after you get settled so I like to have a whole day to check out our new digs.  Especially some of the nicer parks.  Even if you don't have an RV a lot of parks have small cabins and such where you can stay for $50 to $100  a night.  It gets more expensive the closer you get to places like Disney and Key West, but it is still cheaper and has a lot more amenities than a motel of comparable price.  It also feels a lot safer.  Another big plus is that these parks a generally very pet friendly and there is hardly ever a surcharge for our four-legged friends.

One of the best investments we have made is an eight-sided fence that keeps the devil dogs corralled.  We didn't bring it on our maiden voyage and deeply regretted it.  Well, Friday morning we headed back home and to the hell of moving!! Not looking forward to it, but it had to get done.

Pensacola

Blog sounds like something that should be short so I started a new one for this section.  Hopefully I will be able to post, but the baby is up from his nap and now that he's eating real food he wants three meals a day and snacks!

We kind of had a long drive to Pensacola.  My GPS said about 6 hours so you have to figure about 8 pulling a camper and a seven month old.  So we get to Aunt Ginger's about 4:30.  We lost an hour traveling east to west.

Aunt Ginger is my Grampa Bob's sister (my mom's dad).  She was the oldest of four with Arnold, Bob, and Renee' after her.  She lives on an inlet canal of Pensacola Bay with her husband of twenty three years, Larry.  They had made us a spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and a salad.  It was absolute heaven!  After eating on the road a home cooked meal was just what the doctor ordered.  Zeb even had some spaghetti for the first time and seemed to love it.  She shared so much of my family history with me and she looked so much like my great grandmother is was like going back to another time.

We had planned on going to the zoo the next day, but I wanted to visit more with Aunt Ginger.  We looked through photo albums and had a pot roast lunch. Aunt Ginger had made a cookbook and gave me a copy along with a couple of pictures from the albums.  The last three days had turned out to be the most enjoyable part of our trip.  We left at about two in the afternoon to tour our historical campground at Fort Pickens.

Bye-bye Key West and Kids

Vacation can be exhausting! Made our way back from Key West after four nights.  Sent dogs to doggie day camp for three of those nights.  It was just too much.  The kids were great, but didn't really have time for the dogs and kids.  Key West is definitely geared towards adults (think Bourbon St.).  It was beautiful and we had a great time at the Butterfly Conservatory and the Key West Aquarium, but if we make another trip to the keys I will be researching more "family friendly" locales.  On the way back we stayed a night in Florida City, which is right on the tip after you leave the keys.  We took the tollway the next day to head back towards Orlando to drop off Kara and Matthew.  The tollway cost about $30. We went ahead and got the EZ pass (they call it a SunPass and it's $5) at CVS so we wouldn't have to stop and pay tolls.  This was waaaaayyy better than driving through Miami.  It took us over 9 hours to get from Miami to Key West.  We did stop to eat, and get a much needed adult beverage, but jeez you just wouldn't think it was that far.  We checked in to Wekiva River RV resort, set up RV and brought Kara and Matthew home.  We met up with them for dinner along with Shane and Braedon at Joe's Crab Shack in Orlando.  The area we were in was actually Sanford but the shirts at Joe's said Orlando.  It's about 15 min away for Disney. It was great seeing Clay with all of his kids and we had a really good time, but I was glad it was only going to be Clay, Zeb, and I in the camper that night.  Now if we would have known what we knew before our trip we would have just stayed a week at the Wekiva River RV resort.  This place was perfect for families.  It had an inlet of the river that was done kind of like city park in Austin.  The sides were concrete with ladder access except for a large beach access part.  They had a three story water slide and a huge waterfall in the middle which Zeb was fascinated by.  This place had a heated pool, game room with pool tables, huge playground.  It was perfect.  We could have saved a ton of money. We went to Key West because I was born there and Clay always wanted to go. So now we've can say we did it, but next time we visit Kara we will stay right down the road.  We actually stayed at WRRVP for two nights.  I was exhausted and could not hardly bear the thought of loading up the next morning and heading out.  Zeb was getting a bit fussy himself (he was probably just imitating his mama).  So after two nights we got a fairly early start and headed towards Pensacola and Aunt Ginger and Larry.

Key West........finally!

Last night we stayed in Port St. Lucie. It was only a two and a half hour trip after picking up Kara and Matthew.  We managed to leave on time in the morning, pick them up and get to the Roadrunner RV park by 4:30.  It was kind of hectic, but what do you expect with three adults, two babies, and two dogs. The kids were great it was the dogs that were freaking out.  I picked the RV park because it had a hot tub and my back is killing me.  We were so tired when we got there we just ate and went to bed. Today we took off on time and that's about the last thing that went right.  Actually that's not quite true, but more tomorrow.  Trying not to concentrate on the negative.  Sitting on a pier in Key West with a cold drink.  A must try: Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka.  Baby is asleep so I get to spend some quiet time with Clay......life is good.

Valentine's Day

Our third night away from home.
Traveling is a lot slower than I had planned. We are on our third day and are not even to our second original destination.  Tomorrow we pick up Kara and Matthew in Sanford and hopefully make it to Deerfield Beach to spend the night before heading to Key West Wednesday.  Setting up and taking down takes the most time. Luckily we met a nice man named Dick in Mississippi that taught us a lot. Like getting the air out of the water so we don't burn up the water heater.  Zeb is handling everthing really well.  The dogs are another story.  Clay and I are getting better at teamwork. The tension is a lot less between us after the first couple of stops. You really can't help but grow closer. We'll see what how it goes adding another adult and a two year old. I'll never take unlimited amounts hot water for granted again. Hopefully we'll get an early start tomorrow and make some tracks.  Can't wait for the warmer climate.

Baby steps

Looks like takeoff has been delayed by a day. Brought Zeb to doctor today so we have three months before he has to go again, but the shots have left him a little drained.  Spent day before yesterday cleaning RV from top to bottom.  Tonight we put new mattress in.  It freaks me out thinking about sleeping on a used bed, but I don't have a problem sleeping in hotels except for the fact that the mattresses aren't temperapedic.  Go figure!  Also discovered we had no sewer hose so we got one.  We really would have looked green showing up and not having something that basic.  It's been so cold the last two days it's been hard to get anything done. Really need to get a manual or guide or something to learn about all the systems.  During this first trip we will hopefully find any bugs and be able to fix them.

Start of a New Adventure!

Today our 5th wheel was delivered. Sold the house. It should be interesting for Clay and I to hit the open road with six month old Zeb in tow.  Not to mention two weenie dogs Ava and Fred.  The plan is to be on the road with Clay for the next year or two while he works.  First we will take a maiden voyage down to Key West and work out any bugs we come across. I realize that a gypsy lifestyle is a bit unorthodox, but life is short and kids grow fast.  So I plan on blogging about our adventures and travels and really anything else that pops into my head. This way family will be able to track Zeb growing up and I'll have a place to muse about motherhood and to note milestones for future reference. I honestly don't know how blogs work or how others read your blog. My favorite chic lit author has a blog and I've read about blogging so I guess I'll learn as I go. At least this way I think people have to choose to read your blog and I'm not randomly interrupting people throughout the day. Wanted to start blog before we set out not just wish I had later. Well t minus 3 days. Got a lot to do but, Life is Good!
